I have been using Google for academic purposes all the time, and was assuming that it's the only powerful search engine in the internet. Only now, having tried the SweetSearch, I realized that I can search more effectively, faster and easier with SweetSearch. The search results of SweetSearch are 100% academic, and evaluated by internet researchers and librarians. Thanks to Webskills course, I discovered this very useful search engine for myself and will recommend to anyone who is experiencing difficulties with searching for information in the internet.
However, this site is not equally good for all users. If you need to find information which is non-academic, then you need to use other search engines, like Bing, Yahoo, or our-old-Google. Accordingly, depending on the needs, one should be able to choose a particular search engine.

Hi Shahnoza..
ReplyDeleteYay ! it seems that SweetSearch is your favorite search engine now..
Yes..I think both of us were Google fans haha..I like your statement..It's the only powerful search engine on the internet..I relied on Google all the time..I bet that we were frustrated when we couldn't find the articles on the first page but still thought it was the best search engine haha..
I agree with you..SweetSearch is a good search engine for academic purpose but for something which is non-academic..we can rely on Google or Yahoo..I recommend iSeek Educcation too..
We have to search and share all the best things we know to our students...don't we?

Dhika
Hi Dhika,
ReplyDeleteYou are right! We should share all we know with our students, especially, in my case! Because, I teach future teachers of English. I share some links with my colleagues at work my sending emails, during the lunchtime they discuss these links, say how they found nice things there, thank me for sending the links; but they never send links to me. In my culture, teachers don't like sharing in general. They don't tell what interesting warm-up activities they are using, what conference calls they receive, what grants are available, what articles they are writing for publications. It's only me who started sharing, and this year, after my forwarded mail about conference, I found out that 3 teachers in my department have sent their conference proposals. So, things are getting more open and teachers started sharing information with each other.
I'd love to share with you and know from you as well. Do you use delicious.com? It helps me a lot to collect, organize and share useful links I find. You can go to http://www.delicious.com/shahnoza to see my collection of links. I hope you find some of them useful. If you have such collection, I'll be happy to have a look at.
Greetings,
Shahnoza
